Education City Stadium

The Education City Stadium is one of the eight stadiums in Qatar that will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This 40,000-seat stadium is known as the “Diamond in the Desert.” JPAC JV is the contractor responsible for the football venue. Pattern Design was the lead design architect, while Buro Happold was in charge of the engineering design.

Construction of this beautiful arena started in May 2015, but the planning for the stadium began as early as December 2014. The first concrete was poured in 2017, ushering the new stage in the development of the Education City Stadium. And in 2018, the outside structure was finished and avid fans can now see the shape of the Education City Stadium forming.1

The roof got hoisted in 2019, and construction of the facade finished in the same year.

Installed are 40,000 modular seats in November. Two months later, the Global Sustainability Assessment System or GSAS gave the developer of the Education City Stadium a five-star sustainability rating. This only shows how the country and the community care about the environment.2

On June 15, 2020, the Education City Stadium opened. TV programs show that the stadium is World Cup compliant. The venue is now ready to host world cup matches.

It was one of the venues of the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup. It hosted one second-round match, a semi-final game, and the battle for 3rd place. The FIFA Club World Cup game was between Bayern Munich and UANL. In 2020, the stadium hosted the 2020 AFC Champions League. 5 FIFA Arab Cup 2021 matches were at the Education City Stadium in 2021.

The stadium was hit by criticism.

Aside from the global health issues that have affected the work condition, criticism has hit the stadium. Several media outfits have criticized the construction of the Education City Stadium. The poor working conditions of migrant workers had led to this scuffle. Changes were made to improve work condition.

Work went on, and the stadium has eventually opened for the event.

After Qatar World Cup, the 40,000 seating capacity stadium will be retrofitted and refurbished. It will retain 25,000 seats to be used by the school’s athletic teams. The schools are near the stadium. Modular seats are going to stadiums across the globe.

Qatar has been pushing for sustainability, especially in its stadiums. It will help future stadium makers to design better stadiums that are not only practical but are also sustainable.
