Qatar has produced a promising run of results in the build-up to the tournament without facing opponents as strong as Ecuador, whose current sequence of six successive clean sheets makes it seem unlikely that there will be a flurry of goals in the curtain-raiser. Ecuador vs Netherlands Live

Ecuador is ranked six places above Qatar in 44th. Their last three matches have delivered goalless encounters with Iraq, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, and they held Brazil and Argentina to 1-1 draws earlier in 2022.

Qatar has been led by Spanish coach Felix Sanchez since 2017 and their entire squad plays in the domestic league. Qatar’s captain Hassan Al Haydos has an incredible 169 caps to his name and the Al Saad star has 36 goals at the international level. Almost Ali and Akram Afif are also dangerous up top, while Abdulaziz Hatem is a star in midfield.

He’s scored 35 goals in 74 outings and he’s having a sensational season with Turkish giants Fenerbahce as he’s scored 13 goals in 12 league games. To get out of World Cup qualifying in South America is a huge achievement and Ecuador should not be underestimated. They reached the last 16 of the 2006 World Cup and have qualified for four of the last six tournaments.

Eight stadiums are hosting the tournament, which is the fewest ever, and all are in a 35mile radius of the capital city, Doha.

Out of the 32 countries taking part, only eight have previously won the World Cup. Brazil has won it the most times [5] while reigning champions France will be hoping to defend their crown.

What channel is the World Cup on TV?

Fox Sports has the rights in English, and Telemundo — owned by Philadelphia-based Comcast — has them in Spanish. Fox is putting 34 games on its free-to-air broadcast network and 30 on cable channel FS1.

Fox’s top team is John Strong and Stuart Holden. A few weeks ago, they called the Union’s last two games of their first run to MLS’s championship game.

The other teams are Jacqui Oatley and Warren Barton, Derek Rae, and Aly Wagner. Jenny Taft, Tom Rinaldi, Rodolfo Landeros, and Geoff Shreeves are the crew of sideline reporters.

Telemundo’s lead game-caller is Andrés Cantor, who’s been broadcasting the World Cup for over 30 years. Cantor, Ramos, and Manuel Sol call all three U.S. group stage games. Telemundo’s full roster is available here.
